Wow, if the last week of December 2016 is any indication of is on what to come in 2017, then January is going blow in strong! The group of Japanese clients at the Lodge between Christmas and New Year had excellent results with the guys managing to catch at least one 10 pounder per fishing session. That's right, 8 fish over 10 pounds per angler in 4 days of fishing, 6 and 7 pound bass plentiful, and the little 1 pound bass starting to get mixed in with the big ones as we enter pre spawn.

Remember, the Lake has been low for 8 years and with the level reaching 99% in October the lake got a new life. Baccarac is great again! Don't miss it!

Greg Riggle's group of 8 from Arizona is arriving private air today. That's right, we have private air available from Arizona.

Charlie Moore from Oklahoma 6 arriving today with a group of six anglers via commercial air, which has better connections now into Los Mochis.

Word of advice from Narlin and Manuel: the better the equipment you have the better results! Got to be able to make long casts and work lots of territory on the retrieve.

Discounted private air for 4 people: Jan 19th departing out Fort Worth, TX. Call me for details: 806-679-4433

What can I say about this year? This was an excellent fall with a huge number of heavy, heavy bass. The lake peaked at 99% full, and is now 92% full on the last week of the year. Great way to start 2017.

I have never been confident about predicting fishing on any lake. However, I predict that we are about to see an incredible January thru June. I love the way January is shaping up. Groups currently at lodge are racking up trophies fishing structure in 22 ft of water. Small bass are running on the banks.

We have available space the second half of January and various small openings in February.

The guides have all been on the water to practice their guides skills, and we have been making some improvements to the lodge. The best thing is we once again have expanded our available fleet of private aircraft operating Phoenix, Dallas, and El Paso. We are committed to making 2017 the best year ever.

On January 19th we have a discounted private flight for a group of 4 departing Fort Worth for 3 1/2 days of fishing. Call ()806) 679-4433 for more details!

Recently, the Tad Tolson group of four flew into the private airport just 10 minutes from the Lodge, and from the time they landed until 3 hours later all four group members had caught at least 1 bass over 10 pounds. Lake Baccarac is magical.

However, on average the bite has slowed from earlier in the fall as the colder weather is changing the patterns.

The lake is still at 93% full, the highest level in 12 years. We have been begging you trophy hunters to come check it out. I don't think anyone that came was disappointed!

We are expecting a cold snap next week - let's see how the fish like it.

This is the first time the lake has been full in 11 years, and those who remember or were lucky enough to fish the lake 8 to 11 years ago understand what is happening. The monster bass in the deep water have moved up to more catchable levels, and this is just an excellent time for those structure fishermen.

It is certainly the tale of two lakes with certain places on the lake producing high numbers of bass in the 2 to 3 pound range, and then the trophy places producing plenty of 8 to 13 pound fish. Sam Holley brought in 11 bass between 9 and 11 pounds. Ronnie Hamilton reports 59 over 8 pounds. Be prepared to fish in 14 to 20 ft of water if you are looking for the trophies.

My prediction is that December will continue at this pace until we get a cold snap.

As usual, we have plenty of private flights available.

The lake is 99% full with the water clear and trees submerged all over the lake. This is a brand new lake compared to what we've been seeing lately, and the fishing is beyond excellent. Big fish are being caught in all the key areas: humps, cuts, and so many monsters in 20 feet of water.

Bill Hicks' group of 8 had what they called an "excellent trip." They fished the front side of the full moon and were able to catch and release fish up to 12.5 pounds. The humps that guides have identified are productive all day long.

We currently have a group of 6 fishing the back side of the full moon and they are having continued success. Ed Newell has been hammering the 6 to 8 pounders, and Bill Holekamp's boat has been catching fish up to 12 pounds.

The numbers of fish caught are sporadic depending on your willingness to listen to your guide. Listen to your guide!

Lake Baccarac is back and flexing its mighty muscles. Don't miss this action!

Commercial services into the commercial airports are much improved and as always our private flights are flying on demand.

This is one of those magic times with so many fish over 7 pounds being caught. Our good friends from Obregon, Enrique and Gus, just killed it on the lake landing 42 bass over 7 pounds with a 10.9 pounder, as well.
Part of a group of 3 from Fort Worth, Mike Elliott reported a 14 pounder followed up by a 13.5 pounder. His rattle traps ripped across the top of the submerged tree tops producing 7 to 8 pounders.

The humps are holding fish and the ol' realiable 7 inch senkos are doing the damage on that.

Here is the good news: the lake is up and lots of brush under water. You guys remember the last time that happened... explosion of trophies!

Take this report and take action. The fishing is excellent and you don't want to miss this fall.

Several groups have been thru the Lodge since the last report. Fishing remains very good to excellent, with mornings producing around 50 fish and evenings around 25. Good numbers of 5 to 9 pounders, and most are landing a 10+ pounder.

Fish are primarily out on the points and open water humps. Guides Sixto and Poncho are on the crankbait bass and Manuel is currently ranking #1 for overall big bite.

Norman Dx8 and Dx 10 are the best crankbaits, and various swimbaits seem to work equally as well. 1oz jigs from Revenge jigs are showing to be the big bass killer.

The lake is on fire and will continue to be for some time to come!

"Full trip recap

Although Bill had explained it to me many times before we actually hit the water, I honestly didn't fully grasp how unreal one lake could actually be.

We woke up at 4:30 am on day 1 after a very long and exhausting day of travel anxious to hit the lake. Greeted by fresh coffee at the door, we lathered up the 100spf sunscreen and made last minute tackle checks before scoffing a quick breakfast. The ride to the boats was a quick one and we were greeted by our guide "Jim" (Hernado), while our driver Pilar, aka "Sandalman", loaded our gear onto Bacurato 3.

We headed out to our first spot where Bill told me to get ready for bass heaven. No more than our first casts hit the water than bill hooks up on a River2sea bubble pop and hauls in a giant 9" fish which would be known later as "mascots." At that point I got a little skeptical about the lake, but kept casting. The very next cast saw Bill hook up again and his xh Kistler immediately doubles over. Bill is shouting "big one, big one!" The drag is screaming, and I'm waiting to see the fish wish turns out to be a 9-1. At that point I'm pretty sold. My next cast gets hammered with the most violent topwater explosion I've ever seen and straightens the hooks on my vixen, so I switch over to a megabass pop max and get to it. Not much later, I get lit up like a Christmas tree and know I'm into a good one. After what seems like an eternity, my first 8+ ever is in the boat and I'm just ecstatically whooping it up. All the previous talk in the world couldn't prepare me for this, and mind you, it's still in the first hour.

All day we got into quality fish on top relating to wood all over the lake. Each fish we caught battled ten times harder than any fish I've ever caught back home. School after school of 5-6 lb average fish kept us busy all day. Our guide, though he spoke very little English, was still very personable and also very knowledgeable.

Day two brought more of the same. We focused on wood relating to drops and cliff bluffs, and later in the morning focusing on shadows and points. The morning saw me break my pb yet again with an 8-9 on my trusty pop max. Bill got into 7's and 8's as well as we continued to battle many quality fish. Each day you go back in for lunch at about noon and take a siesta before heading back out at around 2pm until dark.

That afternoon the wind picked up to about 15-20 mph and forced us to change our game plan a bit. We headed out to a known big fish spot and started bottom bouncing storm swimbaits; a bait I never thought I'd enjoy throwing. Immediately I hook up with a 7+. As I'm retying from that fish, Bill hooks up with an 8-15 off the same tree. We snap a few pictures and on my very next cast I hook up with a giant. Bill is right there with me as this fish goes completely airborne and I nearly lose it. He's telling me not to panic for which my response is, "I'm already panicking!" Fortunately, Jim is quick with the net and I have a new personal best at 9-11. Bill and I hug it out, as he was just as happy for me as I was to have landed such a beautiful fish.

Day three saw the topwater bite slow, but gave us a chance to get to know Jim a little bit better through my limited understanding of the Spanish language. We were able to teach him a bit about NEF legend, Slughead (aka cabeza de sluggo), as well as learn that he thinks Roland Martin sucks! He taught us how to say Sandalman in Spanish (hombre de hueraches), which we loved. Although we both missed possible double digit bass, we managed to scare up a 37+lb bag and also go into a flurry that we were getting hit with 3-6lb fish on every cast.

Day four was just crazy. We had our pattern and stuck to it. The morning was flat calm and the afternoon was breezy with scattered clouds. We didn't hit many fish, but they were almost all 7+lb fish. Dragging storm swimbaits was the key. We ended day four with four bass over 9lbs, including big fish of the trip at 9-15 for Bill. We had another three fish over 8lbs, and another nine over 7lbs. Our best 5 went 47-8 and our best 10 was 87-8. We stopped taking pictures of 7lbers because they became so common. This was literally the best day of fishing I've ever had. EVER. On the ride back, Jim pipes up and says to us, "No big ones today, maybe tomorrow!" I couldn't believe it. The laughter in the car at that comment was infectious.

Day five was our last shot at a giant but it wasn't to be. We fished our asses off but the bites just weren't there. We ended the trip with a respectable bag of 41-4 and in the last half our Bill had a shot at a giant, but it was not to be. We headed back to the lodge after draining the last of the Tacate light, exhausted and sad to be leaving.

We just spent 5 days on the best bass fishery in the world and that fact is now imbedded in me. It was an experience I'll never forget.

Some quick numbers:

We landed 233 total fish. I'd say over half were 6+lbs.

We had 16 bass over 7
We had 11 bass over 8
And 6 bass over 9lbs

We had 40+lb best 5 bags on four of 5 days.

I have so much more to say, but this is long enough, so I'd be happy to talk individually to anyone who wants to

I'm planning on trying to go again next March or April."

In the last ten days, the daily average size has stayed about the same, around 4 pounds. Everett and Jack Ivy caught several 8 and 9 pounders on wacky senkos.

I fished on the 13th and found smaller fish up the river and around Duck Island, but excellent numbers. Our bigger fish, two over 9 pounds, came from the clearer water in Papachaw.

A new group at the lodge from Xpress Boats is reporting a "double thumbs up" on both size and numbers. They have already busted the 10 pound mark a few times.
