I've fished most of the popular lakes in Mexico, including El Salto, none even come close to the quality and fight of the fish in Bacarrac. Even a three day trip will give you the "opportunity" to catch a 10 lbs.+ bass. On my last trip I fished 5 days and caught 24 fish over 10 lbs! I had one day where 5 bass went 65 lbs (not incl. my big fish of the trip which was 17.25 lbs.), another where I had 62 lbs. and a third where I had 55 lbs.

To "catch" almost every big fish you hook fish light saltwater tackle like the Shimano Calcutta 400 with a 6.5-7 ft. med. stiff to stiff rod, 50-65lbs. braided line with a 25-30 lbs. fluorcarbon leader with BIG baits.

Keep the majority of your rod in the water and reel really slow when your bringing the fish in.

Good luck.

Big rains before Christmas. The lake level has risen two feet over the last two days as huge winter rains have hit the lake. We have had some fantastic action over the last four days – crank baits and spinner baits but I suspect with the near freezing temperatures and rain, the fishing will slow considerably. Tad Folsom reported three fish over 12 lbs. during the first day of heavy rain. We have not seen very big fish in the last couple of weeks so that is a pleasant surprise.

There are multiple seats open on various aircraft over the next 14 to 20 days departing out of Dallas, El Paso and Phoenix. You will need to call 806-679-4433 about the possible filling of these seats.

The fishing has gone from excellent to good to slow the last four days. Kelly Dunn, Stan Byquist, along with our favorite Japanese customers arrived the day the northern blew in. The first time in a long time that I can remember where we needed to use heaters in the rooms. Whereas the week before, we were catching 80 to 100 fish a day, we are struggling to catch 20 fish a day and most of those were less than five lbs. The big fish have obviously gone deep into the creek channels and we may not see them for a little while – it’s hard to say.

Something else, please make note that we have flights available out of Midland and El Paso and we currently have two seats out of El Paso on December 27th, along with two seats out of Phoenix on December 28th on a private plane. Our private jet out of Dallas has three seats available January 5th. We will not respond to email inquiries on these seats but you are welcome to call – 806-679-4433.

Remarkable few days with Gary McNiel’s group flying in in their private airplane, Ed Smith and his son fishing, along with Al Levonchuck – all of them were having just fantastic action which is not the norm at Baccarac, with plenty of six to eight lb. bass and several over nine caught. The main lake points are holding the majority of the fish and the weather is a little cool being that we are in Mexico. We do have a super special on some seats out of El Paso. Give us a call – 806-679-4433.

From Jeff Howell:

Magic In Mexico

We just got back from five amazing days of bass fishing on Lake Baccarac. Living up to their reputation of excellence the lodge accommodations were top notch. Great food & drink, a friendly attentive staff and the best bass fishing guides in Mexico make these trips ones to be treasured.

We were blessed with favorable weather conditions with plenty of warm sub-tropical sunshine. After catching the first few bass we were reminded of just how well-fed these fish are and when pinned to the end of your line they seemed supercharged. Virtually every bass we caught was fat & healthy and pulled like a fish twice their actual size.

Total numbers of bass caught each day were not kept, there were just too many.
Hoping for the “grande” bass Lake Baccarac is famous for, we decided instead to only track, weigh and photo the fish at and over 7 pounds.

As a group, our best 5 fish bag went 50 lbs 5 ounces ! That is by far my favorite stat of the trip. Between the three of us there were thirteen fish over 7 pounds.
~ 7-4, 7-7, 7-7.5, 8-3.2, 8-7.4, 8-7.7, 8-11, 8-11.2, 8-14, 9-8.3, 10-1, 10-2.2, & 11-11 ~

Pleasantly surprised as Narlin Salazar finds the big fishing techniques. It had been somewhat slow but Tag Watson absolutely slayed them using Alabama rigs and spinner baits, reporting the best day of his fishing life. Narlin’s technique of throwing away from the bank back into deeper water was the answer to catching multiple 9 lbsers, plenty of 10 lbers and losing a real trophy that Tag says is the biggest fish he had ever seen.

In the last ten days, it has been typical Lake Baccarac. Some very good days; some very poor. Last week, the Baird Archbald group had mixed results, but did manage ten fish over 10 lbs. and a 12.6 lb’er, the largest. Texas rigged lizard fishing at Rancho Padre allowed for the better numbers, with some boats catching 80 to 100 fish a day. The bigger fish caught on watermelon colored Magnum flukes. Manuel by far outdid all of the other guides, which is typical, fishing with a 3/8 oz. Scrounger tipped with a white 4 inch fluke. The rattletraps, silver with a black back and silver with a blue back was the best bait for the mid-sized 4 to 7 lb. bass. Today, the Dave McKinney group, who in the past have had incredible luck targeting big bass, struggled today and fishing is very slow. It seems like the last three days are a total 180 degrees from last week, with not very many fish biting. The water has started falling as they are filling up the irrigation canals and the water level is still roughly 80%.

With the lake standing at about 80% capacity and currently stable, with the temperatures in the low nineties, fishing is as we expected – a ton of surface activity as fish are cornering shad and chasing them to the top. Although these fish will not take a topwater lure, the schooling bass can be caught using ¾ and 1 oz. rattletraps. Yesterday, four fish between 8 and 11 were caught on rattletraps in the cove Papachaw. With the stable level, fish have been suspended in 25 feet of water out in the main lake. A lot of these fish are catchable with watermelon lizards and watermelon worms, along with bouncing white double-bladed spinnerbaits on the bottom. Just sticking with the basic worm for the day, currently no problem catching between 20 and 50 per day. Last spring, the spawn was fantastic, with countless 9 to 12 inch bass running the lake near the surface.

The massive hurricane that pummeled Mexico last week caused us to cancel fishing trips. The reality is, we got very little rain at the lake in the right places to have the lake rise much. All in all, we got about five additional feet of water and as of yesterday, the fishing was pretty slow with the new food source rushing into the lake. Those of you hoping to that it would fill the lake up, that’s not the case. The lake is in much better shape level wise than this time last year for those of you that are interested. All cancelled groups are rescheduling right now and arriving in the next couple of weeks.

n the last ten days, we are starting to see a rise in the water level with the recent rains. We have also seen an explosion in activity on the lake. Recent trips by Brad Netherton, Shane and Travis Ryal produced plenty of fish between 8 and 12.9 lbs. Fantastic crank bait action but also fishing worms along the flooded timber is producing 50 – 70 fish a day. We4 are posting pictures over the next couple of weeks in the new photo gallery as proof of these amazing catches.
We have groups arriving the lodge this weekend and we will have reports for you next week!

Fishing continues to be exactly what we expect at Baccarac – if you are looking for lots of numbers right now, this year, we are just not producing them, but we are producing huge bass and good numbers of them.

With over a dozen private planes at the lodge recently, we are lucky enough to have pro fisherman Denny Brauer arrive on Mike McVay’s King Air. After the trip, Denny stated it was the best fishing he’s ever done in his life, with one five-fish stringer the last morning of fishing weighing over 50 lbs., with his big fish close to 13 lbs. His good friend an fishing partner, Jim McVay, called and reported that Denny said that our lodging, our boats, our setup and the fishing is hand’s down the best in Mexico and he extends many thanks to Narlin Salazar and Russ Johnson.

Wild Bill Hicks, from Hobbs, New Mexico, departed yesterday and he also reported multiple 8 to 12 lb. fish being caught on deep-diving crank baits. With three big private planes arriving this week and every day the summer rains are getting closer to starting, we look for some great reports over the next seven to eight days.

Hope to see you on the water soon!
